The extended family was extremely important to the ancient Chinese. Most families lived in small communities of cottages, where each family unit within the extended family had their own cottage and piece of land.

    This is true. In China the richer families may live in one big home but where would the poorer families live

    in farming villages members of the extended family might live in separate one room cottages within easy walking distance from one another.
