Colonists, especially Patriots, reacted strongly to the series of taxes levied by the British in the years leading up to the American Revolution.     It was called salutary neglect. Basically, it was about leaving the colonies do whatever it is they did as long as they kept trading with Britain and functioning properly. When the period of neglect ended and Britain wanted to take more taxes from them, this made many people angry and things like the war happened.
