What was the North's battle strategy?

1. Lay siege to the major cities.

2. Sweep the Southern army against the sea by a series of forced marches and 3. quick attacks.

4. Blockade the South.

5. Capture the Mississippi River.

6. Disrupt transportation using commando raids.

7. Divide the South into small sections.

8. Destroy crops and encourage slave rebellion.

9. Capture Richmond.
