The way that the medieval christian church both limited and protected women was by allowing them to hold positions of great responsibility as abbesses of convents. The only options that a women had in the medieval period were to marry or to become a nun. If they became nuns, they would have to live behind the wall of a monastery, living a life of contemplation, prayer and work.
