Why did allied leaders insist that germany pay reparations for the war?

    Germany was blamed for the war and as part of their punishment they were to pay back money to all the countries involved. The thought was that this would discourage them from every attempting anything like what had ocurred (WWI). However, combined with a world-wide depression, this led to the rise of nationalism and Hitler.
