The American Civil War was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America, the latter was made up of several states that had seceded from the Union (United States) to form their own country. They did this because the rights of individual states, they felt, were not respected by the federal government. One of the major issues was slavery; much of the United States was for abolishing the practice, while it was a way of life in the Confederate States. After 4 years of fighting, the Confederate States surrendered to the Union and were all readmitted by 1876.
