Why are arabesques and geometric patterns prevalent in Islamic art and architecture?

    The reason is history. The Islamic community was never about depicting religious motifs even though historically art was mostly about religion. Arabesques and geometric patterns are popular because artists were able to paint them or draw them and they wouldn't be related to religion since they're just patterns.
