For example, cities like Florence and Venice were rich because of trading, and since Florence fabricated cloth, it would serve to them for trade, thus gaining more money

My guess would probably be trade routes, because of all the goods you can get from there, because lots of tribes and merchants accepted little items for expensive ones, which is how empires became wealthy.
