    Thomas Jefferson was the nation's first secretary of state (1789-94); second vice president (1797-1801); and, as the third president of the United States (1801-09), he was a major aspect in the Louisiana Purchase. He created the author of the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom.
