1. But Nixon's policy of detente was good because it eased tensions within the United States and Soviet Union (short answer)

2. it was a great idea. Research into the space age weapons was one of the ways we outspent the Russians on military hardware. By outspending them on defense, we caused them implode and force them to abandon their aims of conquest by military means. They couldn't outspend us.
