Greek drama and theatre was a civil engagement for citizens. It gave relief to the daily lives of people living at he time. Many plays were comedies, tragedies, or recounts of war stories. There were few actors, so masks were used to distinguish characters and provide enough people to put on a show. To make themselves visible and audible to everyone sitting in the theatron (the place where the audience sat) the actors wore platform sandals. The plays were accompanied by a chorus and a choragos who sang and spoke in odes in the play to express the supposed ideas of the audience in response to the events in the play.
