François Toussaint Louverture, who led the Haitian revolution, was a former Haitian slave. He fought and end slavery to gain Haiti’s independence from the European colonizers. He trained his followers in warfare by forming an army of former slaves and deserters from the Spanish and French army and ended the slavery successfully in 1795.
