    The shortage was of people. Without enough individuals to hold the new land and therefore to gain control and power of the area, colonialism in the Caribbean proved to be a difficult task. Without the necessary human cargo to keep intruders out of the newly acquired land and to ensure that everything is running smoothly, it is nearly impossible to create an expansion of economic power.
