(d) is the most correct answer. There was a fear that secularism was growing among the population, and it was thought that this was taking people away from religious belief and religious life. This led to the Second Great Awakening, whereby religious leaders did all they could to re-energize religious fervor in the nation and get people back to a godly way of life.
