The Gulf of Tonkin incident resulted in increased escalation by America in the Vietnam War. This confrontation between the North Vietnamese Navy and the US military resulted in the US Congress passing the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

This federal law allowed the US president to send troops wherever they saw fit, so long as the use of these troops was meant to protect American interests. Lyndon B Johnson, president at this time, used this law to increase America's involvement in the Vietnam War. After this law was passed, hundreds of thousands of American soldiers would be used in the Vietnam War.
