Royal colonies were under the direct authority of the king, while Corporate colonies were funded by joint-stocks and were allowed to have a say on how to run the colony.

The Privy Council is the British Crown's private council. It gave advice to the king.

It started when Roger Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for having different religious views. Rhode Island was a Charter Colony, in other words, they had to self rule.
