What issue did the southerners feel should be left up to the state?

    That issue will be slavery.

    Back then, the southerners felt that their way of lives was threatened by the government who tried to abolish slavery.

    Because there were an overwhelming amount of citizens that rely on slaves on their plantation, the southern states got an overwhelming support to do secession from US
