    The Enabling Act allowed Hitler to establish a totalitarian state by giving the government power to ignore the constitution for 4 years.

    It was a 1933 Wiemar Constitution amendment that gave Chancellor Adolf Hitler the power to enact laws without the involvement of the Reich stag. The act stated that it was to last four years unless renewed by the Reich stag, which occurred twice and gave Hitler plenary powers.
