I went ahead and agreed with "the war between France and Vietnam ended," although technically the agreement was a cease-fire. French troops were to withdraw to South Vietnamese territory (below the 17th parallel). I also agreed with the statement, "Vietnam gained independence from France," because the French withdrew and the United States became the major player in supporting the non-communist government that had been set up in South Vietnam. The Vietnam War, with the US getting involved, did not at all "end quickly." It continued until 1975 - - more than 20 years after the Geneva Agreements were worked out in 1954.
