    Edward maria Wingfield (1550 - 1631) was the first president of the council of Virginia. Captain John Smith (1580 - 1631) thought that Wingfield was not a good leader. He thought that he was unable to keep the peace among the settlement's leaders. They clashed and Wingfild was sent back to England.
