Five cases were ruled on in 1883 dealing with the issue of the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The decision for all 5 cases came together declaring the federal government could not constitutionally prevent segregation and discrimination in state-run public facilities. Therefore the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was overturned and Southern states installed a set of segregation laws which are referred to as the Jim Crow Laws.
