The first stage of the British attempting to conquer the Igbo people was sending in missionaries to influence the people. The second stage was to use trade to show the Igbo people that they would benefit by the things the British had to offer. In the end, force was needed to conquer them because the Igbo people had little to no respect for the British chiefs that were trying to control the area, and no desire to cooperate with them.
