    Before the Civil War, American citizenship had been closely linked to race. White people were usually viewed as the only true Americans because of racist ideologies and a superiority complex. Blacks were seen as property or tools and did their owners thought they did not need citizenship. Other minorities such as Asians were seen as nuisances or tools for cheap labor.
