Why did the Ming Dynasty institute a policy of isolationism

    The policy of isolation during the Ming Dynasty was an attempt to maintain Chinese rule in China especially after the defeat of the Mongols (1368). By restricting movement through China's borders the Ming rulers believed that it would be less likely for any foreign country to once again gain control of the country.
