John T Scopes was a substitute biology teacher in Tennessee who was arrested for teaching the theory of evolution to his students. Scopes planned this lesson despite knowing that it broke a state law. After being arrested, he took his case to court in order to challenge this law. This resulted in a huge debate between science and religion in American society. More specifically, it resulted in debates between creationists, who believed that God created all life, and evolutionists who believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution.
