    The mass transit systems reshaped America in that they made it possible for the wealthier people who worked in cities to live outside the city. Mass transit served the middle and upper class of people in the 1980's. Mass transit has been part of the urban scene in the United states since the early 19th century. It included; streetcars, elevated and commuter rail, subways, buses, ferries and other transportation vehicles serving large numbers of passengers and operating on fixed routes and schedules.
