Uruguay was originally home to small groups of indigenous tribes. This includes the Guaraní and Charrúas. Early on, these small tribes traded with the colonists. But eventually, almost all the indigenous population was conquered, killed, or driven out of their land during European colonization. The Spanish explorers first arrived in the area in 1516. The Portuguese were the first to colonize Uruguay, founding Colonia del Sacramento in 1680 and preserved their presence in the region until 1726. The Spanish then drove them out and began to colonize the country, founding Montevideo.
