It was a 0.5% difference between bush and gore which in Florida law constituted an immediate recount. It was also found that some ballots were hanging chad, so due to a design flaw the machine couldn't detect who the person voted for. Gore filed a complaint with the Leon County Circut Court which made its way up to the supreme court. The court reversed the manual recount ruling that the state may not "value one person's vote over that of another." Bush became president.
