    the empire, Japan was industrializing and therefore was in need of raw materials for its industries. To do this it needed to expand its territories and thus it started aggressive imperialist activity in the Korean peninsula and china. The Korean peninsula and Manchuria were very strategic for Russia and thus the conflict over the regions ended up in a fight between the two countries.
