The U. S. Army was not prepared at all for a war with Spain compared to the U. S. Navy. The American army was unable to train and equip the volunteers who had flooded into training camps as they had lacked the resources to do so. Also, unsanitary conditions in many of these camps were so bad that epidemics broke out and hundreds of Americans died. The U. S. Navy, however, was much more prepared and was able to mobilize with great efficiency to meet the threat of war.
