The boundaries often put rival ethnic and religious groups in the same country.

the scramble for and partition of Africa did put ethnically different people into one colony or state. The effect of this was that some of these communities and religious groups were hostile to one another, prior colonization and after. Even in areas where there was no hostility, colonialists techniques such as divide and rule only served to heighten the tensions and conflicts.

The correct answer is that: The boundaries often put rival ethnic and religious groups in the same country.

Colonial boundaries often put ethnically different people one country. This resulted in hostility and conflict once the states were granted autonomy. The colonialists’ tactic of divide and rule also intensified conflict.
