    Reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War in which the former Confederate states were allowed to re-join the Union only after pledging loyalty to the Union. In addition, as noted in choice (c), there was intervention on the part of the federal government to make sure that former slaves were being treated properly and not being put back into bondage in those same areas.
