    The person above me is certainly correct - the North American colonies rebelled against British control because of D. high taxes.

    They were a new country which at the time belonged to Britain, but they wanted their independence to make whichever taxes they wanted and not depend on another country. There were no language differences - both sides spoke English, and given that those colonies consisted of people from Britain, there weren't any cultural differences either. And who would rebel about low taxes?
