    Answer: Arrogance and out of touch China and its rulers were substantiated. The letter bleats about how the opium trade is damaging China's economy, as vast sums of cash were flowing out of the country to pay for imported opium. However, Lin (or any other Chinese official) never wrote any letters to any foreign rulers when vast sums of cash were flowing into Chiuna to pay for Chinese silks, porcelain, and tea before the opium trade began.
