    William Allen White was born in 1868 was an American newspaper editor, politician, author, and leader of the Progressive movement. Between 1896 and his death, White became a spokesman for middle America. He died in 1944.

    According to him, two reforms the Progressives supported to expand democracy were the 19th Amendment, which called for universal suffrage and the right to recall their public officers.
