    They were important for a variety of reasons. They were the first African American fighter pilots to engage in battle in World War 2. They proved that African Americans could fight for their country too. They were know as the 'Red Tails', for they painted the tails of their P-51 Mustangs red, and were excellent at dog fights. This was important event in history for we were not just at war with the world, we were also at war with ourselves.
