An example of this can be seen with the abolitionist movement in the 1800s. The invention of the cotton gin in the 1790s made cotton farming much more efficient and mass production possible. The cotton industry boomed, and the South's economy became dependent on it. With the increase in production of cotton, and increase in labor was needed. Slaves were the primary source of labor, so slave owners and Southerners depended on them to keep the economy alive. This was an argument used by the anti-abolitionists, that the abolition of slavery would destroy the South's agricultural economy. So, to make a long story short, the cotton gin made the cotton industry boom which made slavery boom which made abolition all the more difficult to achieve.
