Political views clashed because of social-economic factors. The poor held the wealthy in contempt and thus chose the opposing political side. Usually the rich had one candidate they nominated in hopes of being included in the spoils system. The poor did not have this alternative to turn to since the spoils system was essentially for affluent individuals with political ties and/or blood relations.
