The south's reaction to slave revolts?

Many areas in the south sold off families and made sure that slaves were as separated as possible. This was to ensure that, while there might have been more slaves than freedmen, the slaves were always aware that they were second-class and that any attempts to overthrow the system they were in would not be tolerated.
