Emilio Aguinaldo, first and foremost, wanted independence for the people of the Philippines. He saw the United States as a country that would aid in this goal, and assist as liberators from Spain. He valued American ideals, and appreciated their support.

When the United States stuck around after the war and began governing the Philippines, his opinion quickly soured, leading to a war between the nations shortly after the conclusion of the Spanish American War.
