How was "Manifest Destiny" used by U. S. leaders as a way to explain their continental expansion?

Manifest Destiny soon became the concept and idea embodied by the American population of their apparent obligation to conquer the lands that lay westwards from them, and was used to justify the continued colonial expansion of the American landscape by officials and leaders.
