The Missouri compromise was seen as a temporary solution because it did not actually resolve the dispute between the southern slave holding states and the industrial north. Abolitionists in the North may have reconciled themselves to the compromise, but they were still dedicate to the elimination of slavery. Southerners, for their part, were no more willing to abandon slavery than they had been before the compromise.
