African tribes seeking wealth sold their fellow men to the Jewish ship chandlers, who knew they could make a fortune off selling slaves to the new settlers in the Caribbean.

Many Spanish colonists bought slaves for sugar production, and many European settlers bought slaves for cotton production.

The main reason would be that not a lot of people lived in the americas, therefore they needed slaves to work for them.
