    It feared the possibility of a third war

    Any action the United States would take beyond offering moral support was dangerous. it was feared that such an intervention especially that involving military support could possibly have lead to the Third World War. The USA took a similar stance like the one it had taken in the Suez canal crisis which pitted the British and french against the soviet.
