The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965 to override Jim Crow-era laws discriminating against people on the basis of their race or color. The VRA stated that the franchise would not be withheld from a person based upon the color of their skin, as well as disallowing voting tests and other barriers that were usually used to impede blacks and minorities from voting in the south.
