The new Latin nations were hampered by European and North American influences. The liberators could not maintain control of the nations they had freed. Inexperience left these people unable to make the political compromises necessary to govern their countries. Armed gangs seized the opportunities to take control of people who had never been given the responsibility or training needed to run their countries. Couple this with the racial disunity problem. An example would be the Creoles and the Mestizos with their many conflicts of interest. The political chaos led to exploitation. Foreign investors exploited Mexico which caused a long-lasting hatred of foreigners. The U. S. annexed Puerto Rico and placed the Philippines under American rule. Brazil was more successful in establishing a responsible government.
