Founded in 1894, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, often called UDC, was a group of southern women who had elite status and were gathered to shape the memory of the Civil War through creation of monuments, giving out Confederate flags, and handing out books that not only defended the Confederacy but also condemned the Reconstruction. This group also pushed for segregation as well as disenfranchisement.
