Simple, The Empires (Spain, Britain, France, Netherlands, Portugal) simply did not have enough resources on their land to produce goods, so they decided to go to the "fabled lands" (The Americas, Southeast Asia) to extend their influence and have more resources to make essential products. Philippines, for example were once a major shipbuilding colonies of Spain because of the high quality of wood (example, narra tree) and vast amount of manpower.
