The british began levying heavy taxes on the colonies after the french and indian war because they had big war debts. they started by putting a high sipping tax on molasses an sugar, and then the stamp act was put into place. the reason the colonists were so enraged by this heavy taxing was because they had no representation in Parliment.

The British needed money to pay off the war debt so they taxed the colonists so that they could pay off the debt.
