Very shortly after the USS Maine sunk, it was reported that the ship sunk due to an attack by the Spanish. The newspaper headlines blamed the Spanish completely and portrayed them as evil. Due to this propaganda, many American citizens supported the US getting involved in the affairs of Cuba and Spain. This would become known as the Spanish-American War.
